Exercise and physical activity

Introduction

Becoming fit and active is a decision that can have a great impact on an individuals health. Regular exercise has been proven to be beneficial for a wide variety of conditions and its importance should not be overlooked. The government’s chief Medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson states that “the scientific evidence for exercise is compelling.”

The benefits of exercise

The list of potential benefits is long, ranging from improved sleep and circulation to confidence and reduced back pain. Being fit and taking regular exercise will improve your strength and flexibility.

Exercise has been shown to be preventative for:

Low back pain
Osteoarthritis
Heart disease
Osteoporosis
Peripheral vascular disease
Stroke
Diabetes
Depression
Certain Cancers - colon and breast

Which activity is right for me?

It must be something you enjoy as exercise needs to be regular and ongoing. Choose an environment you feel comfortable in. Not everyone is happy charging around a football pitch! Talk to your physiotherapist about which areas of your body to target and the intensity of your exercise in order that you achieve your goal without injury or upset.

The excuses!

There are many reasons why people don’t exercise as much as they should. Work and family commitments. Anxiety and finance. It is often difficult to imagine how regular exercise can be achieved.

Building it into your daily routine is the easiest way. You might get off the bus one stop earlier or walk rather than take the car. Your physiotherapist will be able to help you see where you have the opportunity to become more active in your day.
